Why does Tecton use the Nucleo icon library?

Updated:

An explanation of why Tecton uses Nucleo instead of platform-native icon sets like Material Design or SF Symbols.

The question comes up in some variation of "why not Material Design icons?" It's a fair one, and the answer comes down to platform fit.

Android and iOS have subtle but real differences in their visual aesthetics. Just different enough that when an iOS user opens an app styled with Material Design icons, something feels off, even if they may not be able to name it. The reverse is equally true on Android. Committing to either platform's icon set means the app feels native on one and slightly foreign on the other.

Nucleo sidesteps that problem. It isn't trying to be Material or SF Symbols, it sits between them, which means it is less likely to trigger the "this isn't quite right" instinct on either platform. It also gives us something the platform libraries can't: a distinct visual identity that's ours, consistent everywhere our product shows up.
